REAL ALCÁZAR

The Royal Alcázar of Seville is a historic royal palace originally built by the Moorish rulers who occupied the Iberian Peninsula from the 8th century onwards. It is considered one of the finest examples of Mudéjar architecture, a unique style that blends Islamic and Christian artistic traditions.

The origins of the palace date back to the Moorish conquest of Seville in 712, when the site began its long history as a royal residence. In the 13th century, following the Christian Reconquista, the Catholic Kings took control of the Alcázar and expanded it by incorporating Gothic, Renaissance, and Romanesque elements into the original Islamic structures.

Today, only a few parts of the early Islamic palace remain, including the Patio de Yeso and the Sala de Justicia, while most of the complex was rebuilt or extended during the Middle Ages. Now owned by the City Council of Seville, the Alcázar is the oldest royal palace still in use in Europe and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, making it one of Seville’s most important historical landmarks.
